Antifreeze is Considered Hazardous When Spilled
HazChem Environmental recently responded to a spill involving antifreeze that occurred when a tote tipped over inside a trailer during transport. The incident resulted in approximately 15 to 20 gallons of product being released, contaminating both the interior of the trailer and the surrounding area outside. Antifreeze is considered a hazardous material when spilled, especially in significant quantities or near sensitive areas like storm drains, waterways, or soil. Antifreeze is considered hazardous because it not only poses an environmental hazard to aquatic life near groundwater, rivers, or lakes, but also is a health hazard to humans and can be dangerous. It should not be flushed with water, as it may spread the chemical. Below you will see how to dispose of antifreeze.

HazChem trained technicians went inside of the trailer and found one poly tote damaged, so the crew bought a new 330-gallon poly tote and drill pump to attach to both.
Once the product was at a safe level (20-gallons) they proceeded to transfer the contents as normal. They raised the damaged tote with a forklift and attached a tote transfer kit to both totes and by gravity feeding the contents into the new, they completed the transfer.
Our crew staged an area on the dock floor, to hold the freight on, without making a new impacted area. While taking out the pallets, we wiped down the bottoms with absorbent pads before placing them on the staged area.
Once everything was offloaded, the crew deployed oil dry into the standing product waste and worked it in, for absorption.
The HazChem professionals scooped up the impacted oil dry and placed it into 55-gallon OTS drums, to be disposed of as waste.
HazChem Environmental crew completed the remediation within the trailer and moved onto the affected area outside. The trailer was moved for the crew so the area could be cleaned more thoroughly. They deployed oil dry into the standing waste and worked it in, for absorption.
The four generated drums were sealed, properly labeled, and kept on-site and remediation was approved.
