Our HazChem trained crew arrived on-site and held a health and safety meeting regarding a paint spill. Spilled paint can be hazardous depending on the type of paint and the environment where it’s spilled. Here’s a breakdown:
1. Types of Paint and Their Hazards
-
Oil-based paint: Contains solvents and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These can release harmful fumes, contaminate soil and water, and pose a fire risk.
-
Latex (water-based) paint: Generally less toxic, but still contains pigments, preservatives, and additives that can be harmful to aquatic life if washed into drains.
-
Industrial or specialty paints: May contain heavy metals (like lead, chromium, or cadmium) or other hazardous chemicals, making them especially dangerous.
2. Environmental Concerns
-
Storm drains: Paint entering storm drains can pollute rivers, lakes, and groundwater.
-
Soil contamination: Spilled paint can seep into the ground, affecting plants and soil health.
-
Air quality: Vapors from solvent-based paints can cause health issues and contribute to smog.
3. Health & Safety Risks
-
Inhalation of fumes can cause headaches, dizziness, or respiratory irritation.
-
Skin contact may cause irritation or chemical burns, especially with solvent-based paints.
-
Fire hazard: Oil-based paints and their thinners are flammable.
4. Spill Response Best Practices
-
Contain the spill immediately with absorbent material (kitty litter, rags, absorbent pads).
-
Ventilate the area if indoors.
-
Never wash paint into drains.
-
Dispose of cleanup materials as hazardous waste if it’s oil-based or industrial paint.
-
For large spills, a professional hazardous waste response team (like HazChem) should handle it.
Our technicians donned level “C” fire-resistant Saranex suits with air purifying respirators to work with UN1263 flammable paint. The crew started on the documents.
Loading Dock Trailer Spill Remediation
Haz Chem Team took photographs of the initial conditions before any work was performed.

Our technicians crew located one 5-gallon pail that was forked and two others that were compromised. All three were placed into a 55-gallon OTS drum, to be disposed of as waste. The impact that the three drums had on the trailer floor was 8’x10’. The crew deployed oil dry into the standing product waste and worked it in with hard brooms and shovels, for absorption.
The crew used Simple Green and absorbent pads to make sure everything was lifted from the trailer floor.
The solidified product waste was scooped up and placed into a staged drum, to be disposed of as waste.
The crew scooped up the solidified product waste and put it into the staged drum, to be disposed of as waste.
This spill generated two waste drums; they were sealed, properly labeled, and kept on-site for disposal.
The HazChem professionals finished the documents, took photographs of the final conditions, and remediation was approved.
